Have you ever heard of a business, and just thought to yourself, “How in the world did they think of that”? Or maybe you’ve been struck a couple of times with, “Why didn’t I think of that”? Sometimes, you wonder what could have given a person that idea, or how they turned that idea into a multi-million dollar company.

I remember hearing about this one site a couple of years ago. It was called the Million Dollar Homepage. Sound familiar? Alex Tew had the brilliant idea of selling pixels on his web page, displaying ads from different websites. How it worked, was people would buy a certain amount of pixels on his site, and he would display their ad in that space. At first, people laughed at this idea-that is, until they realized that he was cashing in big from this idea.

This idea that made its way from a notepad to a million dollar website was not an idea that was forced….it just came. He needed money for college, and the idea popped up in his mind as if it had been there the whole time, just waiting patiently for the perfect moment to reveal itself.

Another good place to check out the size of the general market for your product is YouTube. Around half of search engine results are now video based and YouTube is the foremost video service. So if you search in YouTube with keyword topics relevant to your product, you should return some useful results. The most significant thing will be the total number of views. Allowing for the time that the video has been posted, this figure will confirm whether the your online business ideas are generally popular and, also whether you should include your own video as part of your marketing campaign.

These online investigations will give you the best indication of the market and potential of your product idea. Additionally, if your product is in ebook format, you can get still more validation from sites like Clickbank.com, which publish ebooks for affiliates to sell. Just look for a similar product and check out the its sales statistics to confirm that it’s popular.

Developing a business idea is a matter of creating a vision, leveraging your strengths and determining what the market needs. These three steps should get you started.
Close your eyes for a few minutes and conjure up a detailed image of what you want your life to look like in 5 years. Be as specific as possible

Where do you live?
How do you spend your days?
What kind of work do you do?
Do you work alone or with other people?
Who are you surrounded by?
What do you do when you aren’t working?

Don’t limit yourself to these questions; create a vivid vision of yourself, touching on things that are important to you. These are all personal issues that will impact the type of business you pursue – being a city or country person; wanting to travel or sit at your computer; liking to meet people or work on the phone. This activity will help you create a foundation for choosing a business, making business decisions, and setting clear goals.
It is best to do this exercise with someone else and share your vision. If you can’t, write it down to make your vision more concrete.
